Description

Most people preparing for an examination begin with the same question: What do I need to know? That is an important question, but it is not the only question that determines whether you pass. You also need to know how to prepare for an exam, how to organize what you are learning, how to remember important information, how to recognize what a question is actually asking, and how to use your limited examination time effectively.

A person can know a great deal about a subject and still perform poorly on an examination. Another person with less experience can sometimes earn a higher score because that person prepared specifically for the way the examination measures knowledge. This does not mean subject knowledge is unimportant. It means that knowledge and examination skills work together.

Think about two people preparing for the same test. The first person spends twenty hours reading a textbook from beginning to end. The second person spends those same twenty hours learning the examination requirements, identifying weak subjects, studying those areas, answering practice questions, reviewing mistakes, and repeatedly recalling important information without looking at the answers. Both people studied for twenty hours, but they did not necessarily receive the same value from those twenty hours.

That distinction is the foundation of this book. Passing an examination is not simply about studying harder. It is about making better decisions about what to study, how to study it, when to review it, and what to do when the examination begins.

Many adults preparing for licensing, certification, entrance, academic, civil service, or employment examinations face another problem: time. They may have full-time jobs, businesses, children, bills, household responsibilities, and other obligations. They cannot study eight hours every day. Their study system has to work within the life they actually have.

That is why this book does not depend on marathon study sessions. A practical study plan should help you make productive use of the time available to you. Thirty focused minutes can be more valuable than two distracted hours spent staring at pages without knowing what you are trying to accomplish.

You will also learn why practice questions are so important. A practice question does more than tell you whether you know an answer. It forces you to retrieve information, recognize how concepts can be tested, identify weaknesses, and become comfortable making decisions under examination conditions. Getting a practice question wrong can actually become one of your most useful study experiences if you take the time to understand why you missed it.

Another major part of exam success is learning how to read questions carefully. Small words can completely change what a question requires. A person who overlooks words such as NOT, EXCEPT, FIRST, BEST, LEAST, MOST, or REQUIRED may know the subject perfectly and still select the wrong answer. Successful test taking therefore requires both knowledge and attention.

Time management matters for the same reason. If an examination contains one hundred questions and you spend ten minutes fighting with one difficult question, you may sacrifice the opportunity to answer several easier questions correctly. Passing is usually about accumulating enough correct answers to reach or exceed the required score. Your objective is not to prove that you can solve the hardest question on the test.

Throughout this book, we will build a straightforward system around that objective. You will learn how to understand the examination before studying, create a manageable study plan, identify weak areas, use practice questions effectively, improve memory and recall, recognize common question structures, manage your examination time, and develop a practical exam-day strategy.

These principles can be applied to many different kinds of examinations. You might be preparing for a school exam, professional certification, contractor examination, skilled-trades licensing test, entrance examination, employment assessment, civil service examination, or another standardized test. The subject matter changes, but many of the skills required to prepare effectively remain remarkably similar.

There is also an important psychological benefit to having a system. Examinations can feel overwhelming when your plan is simply to “study everything.” A defined process replaces that vague goal with specific actions. Instead of wondering whether you have studied enough, you can evaluate what you know, what you do not know, and what needs additional work.

The goal of this short book is therefore not to give you hundreds of complicated study techniques. It is to give you a practical process that you can understand, remember, and actually use.

Your first step begins before you open the textbook.

You need to understand the exam you are trying to pass.
