Description
Why will one homeowner accept a $7,500 proposal while another rejects a similar proposal for $6,500? Why will a customer choose the second-lowest estimate instead of the cheapest? Why does one homeowner immediately authorize a necessary repair while another continues postponing the same decision for months? The answers are rarely explained by price alone. Customers make buying decisions by considering trust, risk, value, urgency, uncertainty, personal priorities, and how confident they feel about the person recommending the work.
This is especially important in the trades because customers are frequently making decisions about subjects they do not fully understand. A homeowner may know very little about heating systems, electrical panels, drainage, roofing, water treatment, refrigeration, or other technical systems. The customer must often rely on a tradesperson to diagnose the problem, explain what it means, describe the possible solutions, and provide the price. That information imbalance makes trust and perceived risk extremely important parts of the decision.
Customers also make these decisions under circumstances that are very different from ordinary shopping. Few people look forward to buying a new sewer line because the existing one failed. A homeowner whose furnace stops working in January did not necessarily budget for a replacement. Someone discovering a leaking roof may suddenly be faced with an expense that competes with savings, vacations, vehicles, education, retirement, or other financial priorities. The customer may understand that the work is necessary while still feeling uncomfortable about spending the money.
This is why buying decisions involve both logic and emotion. The logical side asks questions about price, specifications, warranty, equipment, expected life, efficiency, repair history, and scope of work. The emotional side asks different questions. Can I trust this contractor? Am I being overcharged? What if I choose the wrong option? What if another contractor is better? What if I spend thousands of dollars and the problem is not solved? What if I wait and the problem becomes worse? A successful sales conversation addresses both sides of the decision.
The purpose of this book is not to teach tradespeople how to manipulate those emotions. It is to help them understand why customers hesitate and what information can make a difficult decision easier. When customers understand the problem, recognize the value of solving it, trust the person making the recommendation, and believe the remaining risk is acceptable, they can make decisions with greater confidence. The tradesperson’s role is to provide the information needed to reach that point.
Throughout the chapters ahead, we will examine how customers respond to price, how they evaluate risk, why value is different from cost, why some people delay decisions, and how contractors can reduce uncertainty without using pressure. The foundation for all of these ideas begins with one important fact: customers rarely make purchasing decisions using logic alone. They buy with both logic and emotion.
